The Surgeon's Journey to Prevention

From Vietnam to Surgical Excellence: Dr. Chu immigrated to the US from Vietnam at age 8, and growing up, she was inspired by Mother Teresa to dedicate her life to helping others. That same inspiration guided her to become a surgeon, with the hope that she could transform lives in the most tangible way possible.

Breaking Barriers: As the first female resident in her surgical program, she learned to be proudly unconventional and lead with compassion. These qualities and her exceptional commitment to the profession earned Dr. Chu the title of “Best Overall Resident” — the first time a surgical resident had ever been chosen for the award at University of Florida Health Science Center.

1,000 Surgeries Later: Performing over 1,000 bariatric procedures gave Dr. Chu the gift of seeing her patients transform their lives, going from wheelchair-bound to walking… and even skipping! But her years of experience sparked a realization: that she was treating consequences rather than root causes.

The Unconventional Choice: After two decades of saving lives through bariatric surgery, Dr. Chu decided to focus her expertise on a new path: precision medicine with the goal of prevention over procedures. She created Chu Precision Health Center to address root causes before surgery becomes necessary.

Why Does This Matter to You? Dr. Chu’s surgical-level precision gives her an edge in the field of preventative medicine. Her understanding of the human body goes far beyond the surface, and her years performing bariatric surgery have brought her face-to-face with the consequences of waiting until it’s too late to address serious health concerns. That experience is what ultimately drove her to open Chu Precision Health Center — a practice built on the belief that the best time to take control of your health is before a crisis ever begins. Explore our services to see how we put that philosophy into action.

About Dr Chu

Surgery Fixed The Outcome, But Not The Root Cause | The Surgeon Who Chose Prevention

For more than twenty years, Dr. Chu performed over 1,000 weight loss surgeries, helping patients transform their lives and regain mobility. But over time, she realized something important about modern healthcare. Most surgeries treat the consequences of chronic disease, not the root causes of illness. That realization led Dr. Chu to shift her focus from surgical intervention to preventative and precision medicine.

From Vietnam to Surgeon to Precision Medicine Doctor

Dr. Chu’s journey into medicine began long before she became a surgeon. After immigrating to the United States from Vietnam at the age of eight, she was deeply inspired by the work and compassion of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. That inspiration eventually led her to dedicate her life to helping others through medicine. During her surgical training, Dr. Chu became the first female resident in her surgical program, eventually performing more than 1,000 surgeries over the course of her career. But years in the operating room revealed something important about long-term health. Surgery can save lives, but it doesn’t always address the biological causes behind chronic illness.
